Dapayk - a 'frickel' mind

Over the course of time, Niklas Worgt has used his share of project names. His most well known would have to be Dapayk. Since 1993 Niklas has crafted his own tracks. Cuts with Drum&Bass and Breakbeat sport the same difference as Pumpin' Techno and Techhouse. As the Drum&Bass live act "Frauds in White" he started to make a name for himself on the barely developed breakbeat scene of middle Germany in the mid-90's.

As "Sonstware" he held residence at parties and stepped into the late 90's as Dapayk. There were a few years however between then and 2001 when he released his first record. From that release, the headline was basically taken as the cornerstone for his various projects in the labelname Mo's Ferry Productions. In Cooperation with Eva Padberg there came the project Dapayk&Padberg. After the first single was released in 2005, a first album was released reaching the years top10 charts of the magazines Groove, De-bug and Raveline as well as bringing Niklas a Top10 spot in the producer Charts. His sound can be characterized as "Prickling" (Frickel) displays the art of balancing electronics music's Minimal, Electronica and Breakbeat froms.

Together with his school mate Jan Langhammer he founded Mo's ferry daughter labels "Fenou" and "Rrygular" as the playground for electronica and minimal techno respectively. In addition to his work as Dapayk, Niklas released since the beginning of 2006 techno tracks as "Marek Bois" on Trapez and Rrygular. In 2006 Dapayk's first solo album was released. He entered again the top10 of the poll charts of German techno magazin "Groove" as best producer, live act and with the album itself.

Dapayk has released on labels such as Karloff, Textone, Orac, Contexterrior,Trapez, Resopal, Friends of Tomorrow, Mo's Ferry Prod., Fenou and Rrygular.

- So.. What got you started back in the late nineties?

I think it was the feel that it was possible to do this kind of music myself. It must be 1993 that i started to play around with music programs and synths. I was a huge fan of a project called RMB those days and the way they used sampling was so new to me, that i wanted to try that myself.

- You've been producing under many monikers like Dapayk solo, Marek Bois, Dapayk and Padberg along with Eva Padberg, and others in the early nineties..Is there anything that makes each of them special for you?

Each project has it’s own sound to me! Dapayk solo is more dirty and experimental than Marek Bois and Dapayk&Padberg. Marek Bois brings straight, clubby minimal Techno and Dapayk & Padberg plays with the poppy side of experimental electronic music.

- You're releasing a new album under the Marek Bois moniker on RRYGULAR in April, right?

Right! The album is called „Boissche Untiefen“ and will be available as separated 12“, boxed 2x12“ and double CD with an extra live recording from Tresor Berlin.

- In what way is this album's perspective different from your past Dapayk solo and Dapayk & Padberg releases?

The Bois album shows my techno roots. It’s straighter and maybe harder than the stuff i did lately as Dapayk.

- Apart from being an artist, you founded Mo's Ferry Productions with Jan Langhammer back in 2001.What's the label's musical philosophy?

Actually, we used the label name much longer, i think since 1999. But since 2001 we’re a business company called Mo’s Ferry. We’re trying to release experimental, floor orientated music. We called it "frickel sound", something between breakbeat, techno, electronica and rave.

- What is the difference between Mo's ferry productions and the label's daughter labels "Fenou" and "Rrygular"?

Mo's Ferry Prod. is the experimental rave music base, fenou brings house, melodic experiments and Rrygular is all about floor orientated club tools.

- Are you satisfied with the label's market share? Is competition hostile?

We're doing fine! Of course we sold more vinyls before the whole MP3-shop thing began, but our digital sales are compensating the smaller amounts of vinyl. Competition is important! Not so much between the labels but between the shop platforms. That's why, we were not so happy about certain things going on at Beatport, like the exclusive contracts. If a label signs the exclusive deal, they can't release their MP3 on any other Website except Beatport. That means, there is no competition possible and Beatport definitely has the highest prices, so the costumer has to buy at the highest price or to wait till the exclusive period of the track is over. If you ask me, the costumer has to decide what quality and for which price he's buying music.

- Most successful release to date?

Dapayk&Padberg "Black Beauty"

- Is music piracy killing your work?

Not really, but it definitely has an impact! We had long discussions if someone who searches the net for free downloads would buy the release at all. People just have to understand that making music and presenting it costs money! You have to pay for better Machine or Plug ins. Everyone expects a good sound and something inventive, but if you're not getting any money as an artist, you have to stick with the free stuff like everyone else. That would leveling the sound of our days even more.

- The gigs.. What do you enjoy most about them and where (in which city) do you find it most?

Actually, i hate traveling, but i love playing! I like that moment in a club when all the machine are running well and it's 15 min after i started playing, the crowd is dancing and the sound is good. That when all the stress falls off of me. One of my favorite places i played was in Nagoya, Japan, but i also like the Watergate in Berlin or the Rex in Paris.

- Should we expect you in Greece soon?

I hope so! I 've never been there before! Actually, i have no idea why! I read so much about the country and the culture. I hope to come soon!

Thank you very much
